We visited a new waterfall over the weekend at Colorado Bend State Park in Bend, TX. The day was perfect for such a trek. The temperature was in the upper 70s low 80s with low humidity and a gentle breeze. When we first got into the park (after taking ~10 miles of gravel/dirt road and encountering free range cows in the middle of the road) we checked in at the headquarters and trekked down to the river for a picnic. The scenery was beautiful and the lunch was relaxing. Then we used the hand drawn map (be sure to ask where the falls are at headquarters, they aren't on the park map) to go back down a little ways on the gravel/dirt road to the entrance of the trail for the falls. The hike to the falls was a little over two miles. The majority of the trail is fairly easy going, but the last little bit is pretty strenuous and the trail isn't well marked. The falls at the end are worth the trip. They are very lush and green and are spring fed so they are going year-round. The waterfalls look like they belong in Ireland or Yellowstone not central Texas. Overall the day was very relaxing and I would recommend taking the drive to this beautiful park. I would recommend against going in sweltering heat though since most of the trail doesn't have tons of shade.
Yay to new discoveries!
